Squeeze’s Chris Difford and Starsailor’s James Walsh are among the acts lined up to play a charity tribute show for late singer-songwriter Matthew Jay.
The promising musician’s family have organized the show at the Shepherds Bush Empire in London on what would have been his 30th birthday on October 10 with a bill which also includes Kathryn Williams.
Jay, who died in unexplained circumstances after falling from a window in 2003, recently drew acclaim for a posthumous album, Further Than Tomorrow, which was pieced together from the recordings he left behind and completed by family and friends. It drew a four star review from Q in the summer.
A prodigious talent, Jay was signed to EMI nearly a decade ago, releasing a debut album Draw to positive reviews and touring with the likes of Dido, Travis, Starsailor and Doves. He died on the eve of starting a master degree in music.
The Further Than Tomorrow event at Shepherd’s Bush Empire will benefit Jay’s two favourite charities Amnesty International & UNICEF with each of the performers choosing one of his tracks as well as playing a set of their own material.
Further details of the concert here and you can hear more of Matthew Jay’s music at his MySpace page.
