Sisters Of Transistors - The Don

As a member of 808 State, Graham Massey was behind a pair of perennial hits in the late 80s which have a life way beyond the Manchester dance scene which spawned them. Working since on a range of projects including collaborations with Bjork, a jazz rock act and various remixes, his latest guise is the hidden fifth member of the ostensibly all-girl quartet Sisters Of Transistors.

The act have fantasised an amusing fictitious mythology wherein they evolved from the weekly afternoon workshops at South Manchester Museum of Keyboard Technology (S.M.M.O.K.T) and as well as being an Organ Quartet, they also function as a ladies social club. Of course it’s (probably) cobblers, but the sounds they create are still an intriguing combination.

Built around vintage keyboard sounds, debut release The Don conjures up the textures of Trans-Europe Express, Giorgio Moroder disco sequencers and the sort of early 70s horror soundtrack you would expect to see reissued on Trunk Records at some point soon, voiced by the chorus line from Hair. In their black-hooded KLF-style robes, the girls (who rejoice in the names of Sisters Wigby Elka Whippany, Ragna Teisco Dottir, Naomi Doric Pencrest and Henrietta Vox Humana) look like they are about to perform a human sacrifice. Be warned.
