Sugababes – Girls

We have, of all things, a Boots ad campaign to thank for reviving interest in Ernie K Doe’s soul-funk track Here Come The Girls. With its good-time parping horns and hip-flicking beat, it soundtracked the Christmas party season as millions of viewers watched a sequin and glitter-flecked group of office staff readying themselves for a night out.

Spotting a good thing, Sugababes have jumped on the track and sultrified it with a sassy new vocal over the original sample with the help of relatively unknown producers Si Hulbert and Melvin Kuiters. Of course there is the obligatory faintly steamy video top accompany it.

The jury’s out on whether this is a good thing or a bad thing but despite the line-up changes over the years, Sugababes have shown an ability to sidestep the usual credibility issues to find a place as a guilty pleasure for even the most discerning of critics. And with six previous number ones, they are clearly doing something right (curiously the description added by Island Records to the video’s YouTube page describes it as a “hit single” before it has actually been released).

You can see Sugababes debut the track live at one of our Q Awards: The Gigs shows on October 1 tickets are available here.

Girls is released on October 6 and you can see the video below:
