Track of the day: The Aliens

The Aliens – Magic Man
The Chuckle Brothers’ impact on rock music has long been overlooked, a heinous oversight considering the amount of time indie loafers have spent lounging around watching kids’ TV instead of getting real jobs. Thankfully, The Aliens are attempting to redress the debt owed to the moustachioed slapstick duo by acknowledging the influence on their forthcoming second album Luna. “Luna toddles an intoxicated path along two axes – one ranging from Abba to Zimmerman and the other from The Chuckle Brothers to Larry David," say the band, fashioned from the raw elements of The Beta Band.

Then again it’s hard to spot the extent of the input on this first taster for the album, a driving synth-heavy slice of psychedelic pop which sits somewhere between Lipps Inc’s Funky Town and Kasabian in their pomp, although it would be nice to imagine Barry and Paul had influenced the melody, or even shaken a maraca somewhere in the background.

The video is incredible – a visual combination of Michel Gondry, The Wicker Man and I Am The Walrus, and one of those backward-filmed promos which leave you wondering how the hell they did it.

Magic Man is out on September 22 and the album is out a week later.
