Woodpigeon – Chorus Of Wolves
Sometimes it pays to dump an unwieldy name. Mark Hamilton’s first crack at songwriting went under the guise of Woodpigeon Divided By Antelope Equals Squirrel.
After knocking out a few surf instrumentals (including a track called John Cusack Escapes From the Nazis) because he was too nervous to sing, a broken heart sent him packing from his temporary home in Edinburgh back to his native Canada where he revived the first bit of the band name (“I’ve always been in love with the word Woodpigeon for as long as I can remember. When you write it in cursive, it looks like a rollercoaster,” he says).
Hamilton has an air of spontaneity about his tunes. He admits that the track Death By Ninja (A Love Song), from new album Songbook, came together with the tape rolling “with no idea what chord I’d hit next or what words would come out of my mouth”.
His new single Chorus Of Wolves is a perfect introduction to his rustic countrified charms, although a few notches louder than the hushed Americana (should it be Canadiana?) of the rest of his album.
You can hear the track each day this week as the five day favourite on Q Radio’s QPM show or hear it here.
