Bears From Labrador – Rearview

From the name onwards, thematically and musically Bears From Labrador might lead you to conclude they are from some North American wilderness, perhaps busying themselves by skinning critters and gathering around a log-burning stove between songs.

The trio in actual are based in London and led by Carlisle-raised Cambridge graduate Dylan Rippon whose past musical projects have involved working with former Longpig Crispin Hunt in the band Gramercy and production work under the name of Brothergunn, as well as founding the Hero Rhymes With Zero label.

Our chosen track Rearview is from the band’s Wilderness EP, released on November 10 and manages to combine I Want Candy drumming with its backwoods verandah countrified guitar picking layered with a whispered trumpet, with a touch of Mariachi. There are delightful changes of pace and touches of Midlake and early 70s Neil Young, while the bridge nods to Cream’s Sunshine Of Your Love. And hell, you've got to love a band which lists among its influences includes the great civil engineer Brunel.
