Keane name their inspirational tracks

Comments

Keane came in to the Q Radio studios to play the tracks that have helped to shape and inspire them musically. Each member of the band – who released new single The Lovers Are Losing on Tuesday, October 28, at 9pm - chose songs by three other artists to give an idea of their varied influences.

You can read edited highlights of what they said about the tracks below but to hear the full interviews and the tracks the band played, tune in to the Keane Jukebox programme on Tuesday October 28 at 9pm.

Richard Hughes’s choices:

Flaming Lips - Waiting For a Superman

“I’ve loved the Flaming Lips for a very long time. They’re an inspiration. They’re ridiculously creative people and their live shows are ridiculous and totally amazing. I just remember going to see them at Kentish Town Forum with Tim. Their live shows are just this massive celebration, it’s just a massive drunken party basically where everybody brings some crazy toy or boxing gloves or massive search light or whatever and they have so much fun playing their music and you can hear it on the record. I think if there was one thing that we really wanted to get across on this record is how much fun we’ve been having in the band in the last couple of years. the Flaming Lips just manage to capture that joy. They’re a band that make the world better. “

Paul Simon - Graceland

“I think Graceland, the album, is just probably the most lyrically perfect record that is in existence. I know Paul Simon’s writing technique involves a lot of notepads and a lot of crafting until every last syllable does the most it can do and I think as an opening line for a song this is probably the greatest I’ve ever heard. The line is, ‘The Mississippi Delta was shining like a national guitar’, which for me, it just makes the hairs stand up on my neck. This man has a command of language to make these beautiful comparisons that I think is totally unique in music.”

Pet Shop Boys -Being Boring

“The video is just lots of oiled up men round the pool. It’s so funny and yet, weirdly, touching. Although the phrase ‘weirdly touching’ with lots of men round a pool might not be the most appropriate choice of phrase! The Pet Shop Boys have been a huge inspiration. ‘Always On My Mind’ was probably one of the songs that first got us into music, full stop. They’ve done the difficult task of surviving and still being relevant and interesting in a modern world which is very fickle and where you have to adapt.”
