Madonna and her husband Guy Ritchie are to divorce, it was confirmed tonight.
The couple, who would have been due to celebrate their eighth wedding anniversary in December, issued a statement to confirm they were splitting after a report in The Sun that the marriage was over.
The union was said to be under increasing pressure during the summer, with talk of heated rows, although they put on defiant shows of strength at public events such as film premieres and Madonna's performances on her Sticky And Sweet Tour. However the arguments have intensified recently with the couple now dealing with each other via their personal assistants, according to The Sun.
A sokeswoman said tonight: "Madonna and Guy Ritchie have agreed to divorce after seven and a half years of marriage. They have both requested that the media maintain respect for their family at this difficult time."
Director Ritchie, 40, who recently released his latest film Rock'n'Rolla, is said to be planning to move out of their London home into the Wiltshire pile they own. He and Madonna - who premiered her own directoral debut Filth And Wisdom this week - married seven years ago at a lavish ceremony in Scotland.
Madonna was previously married to Hollywood star and director Sean Penn.
