Oasis announce outdoor extravaganza

Comments

Oasis – whose Dig Out Your Soul album is currently topping the UK charts – have announced their biggest ever tour of UK open outdoor venues next year.

The band have lined up two shows at the new Wembley Stadium and will mark the centenary of live music at their home city of Manchester’s Heaton Park by playing two gigs there.

The tour kicks off in Manchester on June 6 and includes eight dates around the UK and Ireland. The Wembley shows will be the band’s first since the stadium reopened, although they have visited the site previously. They were among the last few bands to play at the old twin-towered stadium before its demolition, and the shows were captured on the live DVD Familiar To Millions.

The tour also includes the band’s first headline appearance at Dublin’s Slane Castle (they played there as a support act to R.E.M. in 1995) and their debt at Sunderland’s Stadium Of Light and should please at least one fan in the north east. The band’s gig at the Newcastle Riverside in 1994 ended in chaos when a member of the audience jumped onstage to thump Noel in the face and the rumour at the time was that the assailant let fly because he was annoyed the band chose to play Newcastle rather than Sunderland.

The tour dates are as follows:
:: Manchester, Heaton Park - June 6, 7.
:: Sunderland, Stadium Of Light – June 10
:: Cardiff, Millennium Stadium – June 12
:: Edinburgh, Murrayfield - June 17
:: Dublin, Slane Castle – June 20
:: London, Wembley Stadium – July 11, 12

Support acts for all dates are Kasabian and The Enemy.

There had been speculation about the venue for the band’s hometown return, but they ended the rumours by announcing the Heaton Park show which has previously hosted appearances by the Pope and in 1991 was the venue for a tribute concert to Factory Records producer Martin Hannett featuring Electronic, the Buzzcocks and Happy Mondays. The first ever musical performance there was in 1909 when gramophone retailer William Grimshaw took his Caruso recordings to play to 40,000 people after being inspired by the Italian singer’s performance at the Free Trade Hall a few days earlier.

Tickets for all shows will go on sale Friday 24th October at 10.00am through www.oasisinet.com, the Oasis Lo-Call 24-hr hotline, 0844 412 4638 and all usual ticket outlets.
