It's been a week that saw a cherished broadcasting institution disappear from the airwaves, one that polarised the generations. No, not Russell Brand, but the Christmas edition of Top Of The Pops. TOTP may have been banished since 2006 but the seasonal special was still going strong until the Beeb confirmed this week it had pulled the plug. Lest we forget what joys this programme gave us here are Pan's People on the Christmas Day edition in 1971 interpreting George Harrison's peerless My Sweet Lord.
OK, back to Russell, a figure who one moment on the offending show was rabbiting away about chatting to Gordon Brown during a theatre visit; then a little over a week later found himself on the end of the PM's public criticism. How quickly things turn. Hundreds of thousands of fans will miss his wildly amusing banter and frequent appearances from Noel Gallagher. But rather than paying tribute to his radio genius, here is a clip of Georgina Baillie dancing with her burlesque troupe.
Older readers will of course remember that 70s star Noosha Fox actually had a hit with a track called Georgina Bailey.
Of course the other figure in the scandal, Jonathan Ross, who is from a large family. As well as his broadcaster brother Paul and many other figures, he also has an older sibling called Albert. He was a key figure in late 60s blues rock and Fleetwood Mac wrote a song about him. Here you can see a rare performance from former Mac guitarist Peter Green playing that legendary track to mark the release of a box set of his material. Oh sorry, misread that. Should be Albatross.
With Ross suspended for the next 12 months there is obviously a space for Radio 2 to fill. Richard Allinson steps in this weekend but this would be a perfect opportunity to move the hilarious Adam and Joe over from BBC 6 Music. Here's a spoof film Adam Buxton prepared for the UK Video Music Awards earlier this month.
