Sugababes - The Forum, north London
Ever since 2000 when the music press jumped on their debut single Overload like hungry men on a pile of pork chops, the revolving door line-up of the Sugababes has been producing slabs of cool credible pop with astonishing regularity.
Taking the stage at The Forum for the third of this year’s Q Awards: The Gigs with Russian Standard Vodka, dressed all in black and sequins (save for Heidi’s gold skirt) they clearly meant business diving straight into a punchy version of Hole In The Head.
Although the set was predominantly given over to their greatest hits (save for a pair of album tracks and new single Girls) it wasn’t without its surprises. Red Dress came prefaced with the beat from Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s ‘80s hit Two Tribes while Push The Button began with the synth rush from The Who’s Won’t Get Fooled Again.
Aside from the choreographed routine to Round Round, which saw the group pole dancing round their mic stands, the show was refreshingly free of the usual girl group clichés. Arguably more soulful and clear vocally live than on record, the group’s ability was best show cased on recent single Ugly and a note perfect cover of En Vogue’s What You Gonna Do.
Encoring with Girls and 2007’s Cathy Dennis penned pop favour About You Now,
Sugababes left the enthusiastic audience wanting more and tonight’s final
performers Razorlight with a hard act to follow.
