The Hundred In The Hands - Dressed In Dresden/Undressed In Dresden
The Hundred In The Hands looks set to be one of those rare beasts, a worthwhile side project. What’s more it could even overshadow the parent group, in the same way that Gorillaz has at times been seen as more important than the long dormant Blur.
THITH is based around The Boggs’ Jason Friedman and touring bandmate Eleanore Everdell (who recently added her vocals to TV On The Radio’s supreme Dear Science album) who ventured into the studio after a 2007 US tour and started working away from the rest of the band. For Friedman this was an opportunity to adjust his parameters and not taking the lead with others following, as was the case with The Boggs. “Working with Eleanore, it was clear that the time had come to shift into a more equal partnership” he says.
The first fruits of the pair’s labours are the twin tracks Dressed In Dresden and Undressed In Dresden. The former kicks off with choppy Wire guitars, but as the airy vocals come in, it all drops away to moments of near-PiL dubbiness. There are claves, handclaps, cavernous echoes, an organ and Eleanore’s sublime voice. Undressed … is a revamped version with a Psycho Killer bassline, brass fanfares and electronica. You really can’t help but fall in love with this track.
As the band themselves say: “These are soundsystem-backed, foot stomping, clap hands beats for akimbo-limbed boogie kids. Ballrooms and bar floors are built strong, it’s time to give them a pounding.”
The tracks are available as free downloads – here is Dressed In Dresden and here is Undressed In Dresden.
