Tony Christie - Danger Is a Woman in Love
Until recently Tony Christie, as penetrating and accomplished as his voice is, was a minor footnote in the annals of pop. A cabaret singer who hit lucky with I Did What I Did For Maria and his theme to Seventies TV show The Protectors, Avenues And Alleyways. Even an attempt at career rehab in the 1990s when he performed the Jarvis Cocker-penned track Walk Like A Panther with All-Seeing I had been largely forgotten.
As we all know it was Peter Kay’s appropriation of Is This The Way To Amarillo? which gave Christie an unlikely seven-week span at number one and introduced him to a generation that was otherwise oblivious to his considerable charms. Capitalising further by teaming up with sympathetic champions of his work, the 65-year-old has now hit critical paydirt. The album Made In Sheffield – out in November is a touching, atmospheric and nostalgic tribute to the songs and artists of the city which for many years he made his home. Chiefly, Richard Hawley who co-produced the album but also the songwriting prowess of Jarvis Cocker, Arctic Monkeys and The Human League. It’s not quite in the same mould as the Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin American Recordings, but a captivating listen.
Today’s track was written by a lesser known songwriter Martin Bragger, known locally as Billy Martin Jr, (the “delta blues man of Sheffield”), and a highlight of the album. The arrangement is a touch of classic candle-lit Hawley: tender strings, tremelo-heavy guitarlines – a little slice of Matt Monro. And Christie’s voice is sublime.
The first single from the album Cocker’s Born To Cry is released on November 3.
