Casiokids – Grønt lys i alle ledd

They come from the land of ice and snow but look less like Viking berserkers and more like the motley crew left when the lights come up at the indie disco. Norway’s Casiokids have been making keyboard-infused funky pop since 2005, mixing analogue kit with cheap Casio keys to produce the kind of sound Sigur Ros would make if they’d been slipped some New Order records and a truck of Prozac.

Grønt lys i alle ledd is a burbling mix of electro and ultra cheery pop, a jaunty riff coupled with swathes of old school synths. It’s also the first single to be released in the UK with entirely Norwegian lyrics – we’ve got no idea what they’re singing about but they sound happy doing it. With live performances that incorporate shadow puppetry, Casiokids are joyful to watch and that happy outlook translates to their records with other tunes mashing together a dizzying array of influences from Ivor Cutler to reggae legend King Tubby.

The band’s debut album, the unnecessarily umlauted Fück MIDI was released in 2006 but this single comes from their as-yet untitled second record. It's out via Moshimoshi on October 27.
