Headless Heroes – The North Wind Blew South

It’s not the most innovative idea – take a bunch of great tunes and re-tool them in a way quite unlike the originals. Indeed Eddie Bezalel, the main protagonist here, has already been heavily involved in Mark Ronson’s Version.

But with Headless Heroes, a project which Bezalel has curated, the delivery and choice of material are impeccable enough to transcend the lack of thematic innovation. The results are stunning widescreen, windblown, reverb-soaked performances which transform the raw materials into countrified, folk-ed up beauties.

Tender renditions of JAMC’s Just Like Honey and I Am Kloot’s To You, rub shoulders with more specialist finds such as a Linda Perhacs cover on debut album The Silence Of Love, which features vocalist Alela Diane as well as involvement from David Holmes and producer Hugo Nicholson.

Lead single The North Wind Blew South is a wilfully obscure cover of a Philamore Lincoln track which allows Alela to perform wistful vocal gymnastics over an ocean of strings strings and skeletal, picked guitar.
