Jay Jay Pistolet – Happy Birthday You
Bearing in mind everybody has one, you would think there might be more great songs about birthdays. With a touch over 60 million people in the UK, you have 1.15 million celebrating a birthday every week each with dozens of friends wondering about what to buy them, you would have thought there was an open market for gifts – and everyone wants something different to sing at your party. Hundreds of acts target the Christmas market but precious few have bothered to tackle birthdays, such as Altered Images, The Beatles, Sugarcubes (try singing that one as you watch someone blow out their candles) and, erm, Bambi Slam.
Thankfully Justin Hayward Young has treated us to this lead track from his forthcoming EP to expand the slim repertoire. From the same scene that has produced Noah And the Whale (the band’s Charlie Fink has produced this EP), Mumford And Sons and Laura Marling (whom Young is supporting on tour), Young (aka Jay Jay Pistolet) has been a live fixture around the London live circuit for a year or so and has now been picked up by Stiff Records.
Happy Birthday You is a touchingly romantic tale set to a captivatingly dreamy skiffle, which nods to Richard Hawley and forebears such as Roy Orbison. It’s even got a muted trumpet solo. You’ve got to love a guy whose debut single We Are Free included a line as masterful as “lost our heads and ventured into Leicester Square, willingly I’ll never spend a second there”.
The Happy Birthday You EP is released on November 17, to conclude his UK tour with Marling.
