Ra Ra Riot – Ghost Under Rocks
The great landmarks of life – birth, the end of a relationship, death - often provide the greatest inspirations. For Ra Ra Riot it has been the death of their drummer John Pike which has infused and shaped the debut album The Rhumb Line.
More than a year since Pike drowned, his presence looms still looms large within the group. On the band’s MySpace page he is still listed in the band’s personnel (as “co-writer / lyricist / vocalist, drummer, and lifelong inspiration”), along with the message "We will always love and miss you, John". And with tracks such as Ghost Under Rocks, his passing is a lyrical constant, although in a hopeful rather than morbid way.
With the album's confetti of strings sprinkled over more traditional indie-rock arrangements giving a deeper emotional resonance, the easiest reference point is Arcade Fire, although with next single Ghost Under Rocks (released October 13), the track is given an extra dynamic with its Hi-NRG bassline.
