Skint & Demoralised – The Thrill of Thirty Seconds
Is Wakefield the new rock and roll hub? Ah, well, probably not, but it has produced two tracks of the day in as many days. Matt Abbott, a teenaged John Cooper Clarke from the other side of the Pennines, built up a reputation on the spoken word circuit before teaming with Sheffield producer MiNI dOG to create Skint & Demoralised after linking up online.
Championed by Steve Lamacq, the pair landed a deal with Mercury and recorded their forthcoming album with soul band The Dap Kings, whose collaborations have included work on May Winehouse’s Back To Black and Mark Ronson’s Version, as well as their regular work with Sharon Jones.
Half-spoken, half-sung with an unforced West Yorkshire accent, Abbott’s poems tell of everyday encounters and emotions with a breezy musical sparkle. The Thrill of Thirty Seconds – the single to be released on November 17 - is built around a beat pitched between Lust For Life and This Charming Man, with a Marr-ish guitar line accompanying Abbott’s tale of a “secret rendezvous”.
