V V Brown is a busy lady. As a singer, songwriter, performer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, she clearly has to whip through Crying Blood at such a rattling speed to make sure she fits everything in before bedtime. In this, her debut single, she recounts rather graphically the aftermath of a painful break up from some particularly boorish fellow. However, for a lady whose optical orifices are purportedly awash with haemoglobin, she’s in pretty chipper mood.

Brown describes her sound variously as “indie doo-wop” or "musical mashed potatoes". Certainly this song is upbeat, perfect pop. Brown herself is a refreshingly bonkers breath of fresh air – she describes her music as “Honest – it’s not about being festooned with £10m diamonds or having perfect hair” (although, she does have very nice hair).

The singer has learned a lot since lending her vocals to Pussycat Dolls songs in L.A at 19. “I lost myself completely” she says “I lost my identity. My voice. Everything.” She returned to the UK flat broke and determined never to compromise herself again. And it seems to be working out for her, as a recent Jools Holland slot testifies.

The chorus to Crying Blood, which Brown wrote on a one-string guitar, bears more than a passing resemblance to the spoof classic Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt Kickers. Like, it’s kind of the same notes, in the same order and everything. Ah well, it’s jolly good and spookily seasonal - Happy Halloween!
