Brighton Port Authority featuring Emmy the Great - Seattle
Norman Cook has been ever the master of reinvention over the 20-plus years he has been a regular chart fixture. So after a career that has seen him charge from the twee pop of The Housemartins, through a variety of dance guises and a solid DJ-ing backbone as Fatboy Slim, he now pitches up with his latest wheeze Brighton Port Authority.
It’s something of a superstar collective – built around Cook and long-time collaborator Simon Thornton - which has already seen one release with guest vocals from David Byrne and Dizzee Rascal. Other tracks feature artists such as Martha Wainwright, Jamie T and Iggy Pop. A mythological tale behind the recordings reckons they date back to the 70s and the sound is certainly rooted three decades ago.
New single Seattle sounds like a freeform groove by Neu – to some extent, the sort of thing David Holmes was exploring with a previous Track Of The Day with I Heard Wonders - with a touch of the Balearics, plus Emmy The Great’s elegantly graceful vocals dancing across the top, as well as an appearance from Jack Penate. Blissfully chilling.
BPA’s debut album I Think We Need A Bigger Boat is lined up for a release in the new year.
