Emmy The Great - We Almost Had A Baby
That great philosopher of our times, Stephen Patrick Morrissey once sagely noted that these things take time and that's certainly been the case with Hong Kong born, London based anti-folker Emmy the Great. Emmy (Emma Lee-Moss to her friends) deals in acoustic melancholia underpinned by sharp lyrics that would make even Mr Morrissey proud.
Though a prolific songwriter, since emerging in 2006 Emmy has only released a handful of singles and EPs instead spending her time building a live following supporting a myriad of artists from Martha Wainwright to the Mystery Jets and collaborating with other London acts, most notably Lightspeed Champion.
Finally her debut album, First Love, is finished and set for release in February. We Almost Had A Baby is the first single - a deceptively jangly folk pop confection slathered in Spectoresque backing vocals which conceals a dark little break up tale. The B-side (some people still cling to these old fashioned traditions) is the similarly stark Short Country Song which opens with an image of a boy flicking through a pornographic magazine.

Also worth checking out are her startling cover of the chronically over-played Pixies classic Where Is My Mind? and and a sparky acoustic take on Ash's Burn Baby Burn, both of which are on her Myspace page.
