Franz Ferdinand – Ulysses

When Franz Ferdinand first registered on the national radar in early 2004 it was for the crunching clockwork monster Take Me Out and ever since, their sound has been very much as the literate guitar quartet.

But for their third album there has been a knowing, calculated rebirth, certainly on the basis of this first taster. Not only does it sound kinda sexy but it is swathed in chunky sensual synth sounds. As it lulls you in with a sparse beat you could almost imagine the breathy purr of Kylie to burst in, although by the time you hit the la-la-la-las of the chorus you are back in familiar Franz territory, although it is by no means a bad thing.

The album Tonight – which features a human skeleton as a percussive aid – is, according to the band, a celebration of ‘music of the night’: “To fling yourself around your room to as you psyche yourself for a night of hedonism, for the dance-floor, flirtation, for your desolate heart-stop, for losing it and loving losing it, for the chemical surge in your bloodstream. It’s for that lonely hour gently rocking yourself waiting for dawn and it all to be even again,” they say.

And despite the highbrow demeanour of the band, Kapranos has already revealed that Ulysses was not exactly inspired by Joyce’s masterpiece of the same name. “Somebody said it was about James Joyce. It's absolutely nothing to do with that, it's about being too stoned," he has said.

Tonight is due for release on January 26, with Ulysses due a week earlier.
