The Gaslight Anthem - Old White Lincoln
The past 12 months have been good to The Gaslight Anthem. Having released their second album, the critically acclaimed The ’59 Sound, back in August, the New Jersey quartet have seen their profile rise dramatically – not just in the US, but over here too.
Clearly inspired by fellow New Jerseyan Bruce Springsteen, they infuse the sense and sound of The Boss (between, say, Born To Run and Born In The USA) with the urgency and vitality of the contemporary punk scene with which they’re associated. The result is an album mixing the frustration of dead-end jobs in the same “town full of losers” that Springsteen sang about on Born To Run with the thrill of opportunity and escape.
Old White Lincoln is the album’s second single. As the title suggests, it is a track permeated by classic US imagery – of old '55s, of classic cars and movie screens, of high-top sneakers and sailor tattoos – but also by a very American optimism in the face of adversity. Its driving, punchy melody and the rich, organic sound is typical of the band’s output. It makes this song simultaneously old-fashioned and modern, outdated yet effortlessly cool – much, perhaps, like the car it’s named after.
