The Pet Shop Boys – whose haul of this includes four number ones - are to be honoured for their Outstanding Contribution to Music at next year's Brit Awards.
Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, who have been behind tracks such as Being Boring, It’s A Sin, Love Comes Quickly and West End Girls – will collect their award and close the show when the event takes place at Earl’s Court in February 2009.
Last year the title was awarded to Sir Paul McCartney and other previous winners have included Oasis, U2, Fleetwood Mac and Sting.
Chairman of the Brits committee Ged Doherty said: "Since their first BRIT Award over 20 years ago, Neil and Chris have produced a fantastic body of work with songs that truly were the soundtrack to a whole generation's lives. "The Pet Shop Boys have since become one of the most influential groups of the modern era and are deserving recipients of the award."
The band’s first chart-topper West End Girls won the pair their first Brit Award for best British single in 1987, and the following year they were named best British group.
Simon Cowell had reportedly been in the frame for this year’s outstanding contribution award. The ceremony on February 18 will be presented by Gavin and Stacey stars James Corden and Mathew Horne.

Pet shop boys are absolutely fab, fab, fab, I enjoyed Duffy who is terrific and I wish her all the luck in the world she is something else, very different and original, Pet Shop boys you are eternal!!!
