Gary Go - Heart And Soul
Gary Go’s influences apparently include David Bowie and Nine Inch Nails but rather than delivering a gender-bending industrial rock apocalypse he writes epic piano pop that sounds like Supertramp retooled for the Noughties.
The sparse piano ballad Heart And Soul is catchier than a mutant strain of
the flu and sure to soundtrack one of those slow motion montages that follow
an England football defeat, while another of the tracks from his forthcoming album, So So, brings a welcome dose of cynicism to Go’s soaring melancholy.
Having spent his youth in Wembley listening to the faint sounds of bands
playing at the stadium Go has developed big ambitions and looks set to gain
the lighters aloft adoration enjoyed by Snow Patrol and The Feeling. He says
his songs are “like self-help guides”. That’s an apt metaphor for his
everyman meditations on love and life, which are sure to be the soundtrack
for a million teenage break-ups next year.
