The Molotovs - Flowers

From the “mix me a Molotov" of M’s Pop Musik to the “volatile Molotov’ of The Clash’s Straight To Hell, the hand-launched petrol bomb named after Soviet foreign minister Vyacheslav Molotov clearly has an intrinsic place in the rock world, at least lyrically.

Curiously though for a band named after a DIY explosive, they are not the incendiary mix their name may suggest; instead, there is a polished restraint and structure in place of coruscating, overdriven noise.

London-based band The Molotovs formed at school then regrouped after heading off to college separately and play what they say is “twenties-inspired bar room French pop music”, although the sound is rather more by accident than design.

With today’s track Flowers the band absorb - like Vampire Weekend and early James - the band absorb an African guitar feel into their sound, with punchy ska horns and a vocal delivery that owes a small debt to Alex Turner.

Flowers is the band’s debut single and is due to be released on the Fierce Panda offshoot Cool For Cats on November 24.
