It’s amazing Youthmovies can find the time to actually make records. With the distractions of running record labels, endless touring and spin-off projects there’s hardly any time for the day job.
The Oxford-based band have tie-ins with Foals (Youthmovies frontman Andrew Mears was formerly a member of the band and guitarist Al English put out their earliest release via his Try Harder label) and have often toured with them, as well taking their place on bills alongside acts such as Biffy Clyro, Death Cab For Cutie and Mission Of Burma over the past few year.
They cite Sonic Youth as an inspiration and you can spot elements of Thurston Moore’s experimentation in the guitars, but they use a much broader palette to paint their world.
Today’s track of the day Magic Diamond draws on the worldweary shuffle of Elliott Smith’s Waltz No.2 (yes I know it should be a hash sign, but can’t find it on this damn keyboard), punctuated by funereal brass reminiscent of Radiohead’s Life On A Glasshouse. Within seconds they have used the word ‘lachrymose’ and made repeated references to ‘Moebius strips’, showing their vocabulary is a cut above your average indie band.
But then they are off exploring new realms – this could be a Tortoise soundscape in places, with out-of-sync horn figures circling keyboard oscillations and pulsing bass.
Magic Diamond features on the new Polyp EP which is out on Monday. [You can hear it here]
