Brakes – Crystal Tunings
For a side project, Brakes is so much better than most bands’ day jobs. Formed in 2002 (the year that half the band picked up a Mercury nomination in their other guise as Electric Soft Parade), the quartet has existed alongside its protagonists’ proper careers with increasingly impressive results.
Sometimes wilfully silly – as with Comma Comma Comma Full Stop – and at others , creating impressively accomplished country-rock, the band will, in the next few months, unleash its third album Touchdown thanks to a newly signed deal with Fat Cat (it’s so fresh, the ink is still wet).
Our exclusive download Crystal Tunings is the first taste of an album which shows the band's mastery of a range of styles and tempos. At times the band sound like they are about break into a hoe-down, but on this joyously power-chord heavy track there is more than a hint of Jesus And Mary Chain (after they ditched the waves of feedback).

And if you haven’t already checked out the joyous track Porcupine Or Pineapple you can find it out at their MySpace page here.

Another magic offering from the Brakes boys - a band I insist on catching at least every 6 months to get my indie fix.
Please play Northampton on your next tour instead of Oxford. The atmosphere is so much better!!
