Take That star Gary Barlow has revealed he used to be sneered at during his solo years whenever he tried to use his credit card on the phone.
The songwriter became a figure of fun after the band split in 1996 and his initially promising career alone dried-up. He became a virtual recluse for a while, eventually concentrating on writing and production and moving to LA to escape his nightmares as he sunk to the depths
Speaking about his lost years he told the new edition of Q: "It was really shit. It's hard to explain because on the one hand, 'Oh you're no longer a pop star, who cares?' But what shocked me most was that it was a shock. I couldn't believe I hadn't seen it coming. All the stuff in the history books had happened. And so quickly.
"And not only that but the tabloids turned me into a hate figure. I really was embarrassed to use my credit card over the phone because when I said 'Gary Barlow', people would just laugh or sneer. Not a good experience at all," he added.
