Coldplay and Duffy lead field for Brits noms

Coldplay and Duffy lead the field as the nominations for this year’s Brit Awards were unveiled tonight with each shortlisted for four awards.

Coldplay’s haul for the awards event – which takes place on February 18 - includes nods for best album (for Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends) and best group, while Duffy is up for best album with Rockferry and best British female. (You can read the full shortlist here)

Surprising inclusions in the shortlist include a head-to-head between two 67-year-olds in the best international male category with Seasick Steve taking on Neil Diamond, as well as Beck, Jay-Z and Kanye West. And The Killers, AC/DC, Kings Of Leon, Fleet Foxes and MGMT each get double nominations as the best international group category replicates the the best international album shortlist with each act appearing on both.

The prized best British album category sees Coldplay and Duffy taking on Elbow’s The Seldom Seen Kid, Radiohead’s In Rainbows and The Ting Tings’ We Started Nothing.

Mercury Prize-winners Elbow are among a trio of acts have weighed in with three nominations apiece - the others are Scouting For Girls and Adele, who took the inaugural Critics’ Choice title at the 2008 Brits. Florence & The Machine have already been announced as this year’s Critic’s Choice winner.

This year’s event – which will be screened live from Earl’s Court, west London – is to be hosted by Kylie Minogue, James Corden and Mathew Horne, with performances announced so far from outstanding contribution winners the Pet Shop Boys as well as U2, Kings of Leon and Duffy.

Coldplay and Duffy’s nominations also include the best single category (for the tracks Viva LA Vida and Mercy), alongside tracks by Adele (Chasing Pavements), Alexandra Burke (Hallelujah), Dizzee Rascal Featuringg Calvin Harris and Chromee (Dance Wiv Me), Estelle Ft Kanye West (American Boy), Girls Aloud (The Promise)
Leona Lewis (Better In Time), Scouting For Girls (Heartbeat) and X Factor Finalists (Hero). The winner will be chosen by public vote on the night.

  • What is "karina" talking about?!

    Anyway... The Brit Awards haven't been relevant since BritPop. They just give awards to artists that sell wel; It gets the year-on-year ratings up and they can charge a fortune for advertising.
