Empire Of The Sun - Walking On A Dream
Empire Of The Sun is the harrowing novel/memoir chronicling JG Ballard’s formative experiences as a child prisoner of war which shows in horrific detail the brutalising effect of war (you need only read any of his other books to figure how disturbed the author was by his grim experiences). Few who have ever read it could fail to be untouched, and it later gave Christian Bale as an early starring role when he played the central role of the temporarily orphaned Jamie Graham.
Now the name has been adopted by The Sleepy Jackson’s Luke Steele and Pnau’s Nick Littlemore for their side-project of dreamy, whistful electronic pop which promises enlightenment and salvation for any converts. This incarnation of the already accomplished Steele sees his noted wind tunnel hairdo take on a ghostly tinge and he clearly moved when the Adam Ant stripe was being applied to his nose.
The music (which has earned them a place in the BBC’s Sound of 2009 shortlist) is unashamedly infused with 80s synth confections, with the album – also called Walking On A Dream– effectively chronicling the duo’s travels, “like a spiritual road movie” according to Steele.
