Folksong Oblivion - The Phantom Band
The Phantom Band adopted their name after a period of shape-shifting which saw them take on a new identity for every gig. Such uncertainty doesn’t pay when it comes to flogging albums with a new debut album lined up for release on Chemikal Underground. Still they do manage to continue their contrariness by hiding their faces onstage and in photos, a stunt which has seen the Glasgow sextet looking remarkably like Daryl Hall and John Oates.
With, at turns, the metronomic krautrock of Neu!, the doom-laden drama of Nick Cave, touches of folk – the album, Checkmate Savage, is a voyage of discovery. But the musical diversity isn’t without its problems. "The Phantom Band are the most self-destructive, directionless, negative collection of argumentative individuals I know, who go out of their way to mess up anything that might be working in their favour,” says the band’s organist Andy.
Today’s track is the new single Folksong Oblivion which is a taster for the album and is also the ‘Five Day Favourite’ single of the week on Q Radio’s QPM show throughout this week.
