Frankmusik - If I Had

Though his stagename might suggest Germanic heritage, Vincent Frank actually hails from Croydon. Hotly tipped for 2009 – and with a support slot on Keane’s upcoming tour, the hype looks set to be realised – Frankmusik’s a DJ/musician hybrid who makes fun, bouncy, shiny, glossy, upbeat pop about, mainly, girls and the hold they have over him.

If I Had is a zealous blast of 80s-esque synth pop; a paean to an unobtainable woman. Essentially it's a speeded-up version of (and tribute to) the 1977 hit If I Had Words by Scott Fitzgerald and Yvonne Keeley, which itself was based on Saint Saens’ Organ Symphony, Frankmusik’s If I Had teeters rather precariously on the divide between infectious and annoying and is bound to polarise opinion the more you hear it.

While it won’t be to everyone’s taste, it’s probably one of those songs that will feed into the predicted obsession with electronic-based acts in 2009. By using retro synths, Commodore 64 samples, fast chunky drum riffs and all sorts of other technological trickery, the precocious 22-year-old makes If I Had sound like a song from, well, the year he was born.
