Hotly tipped Little Boots aka Victoria Hesketh, was today named the act to watch out for in 2009. The 24-year-old singer has topped the BBC’s Sound of 2009 poll of tastemakers and critics, with White Lies ranked second.
Hesketh – a recent inclusion in the New To Q section of Q Magazine – was until a few months ago part of trio Dead Disco, and went on to work with Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard to establish her solo career.
She said: "For enough of those pundits to pick me as their favourite act is absolutely incredible and really mindblowing. I'm just so happy that it connects to those people.”
Alison Howe, producer of BBC2's Later With Jools Holland and who featured Little Boots on the show, said: "Imagine if Debbie Harry had come from Blackpool and played the synthesiser. 2009 looks set to be dominated by the sound of electro-pop and Ms Boots should be one if its stars with her wonderfully catchy pop songs."
Last year, Adele came top, followed by Duffy, The Ting Tings and Glasvegas.
The top five acts in this year's poll are:
1. Little Boots
2. White Lies
3. Florence and the Machine
4. Empire of the Sun
5. La Roux
