Micachu And The Shapes – Lips

Why use a vacuum cleaner for housework when you could put it to a musical use? That’s certainly Micachu’s approach. With her taste for making the ordinary into the sublime, Mica has dabbled in places where other artists would fear to go. Mixing classical composition with garage, her sound is a bricolage of wailing squawks, loops and the aforementioned Hoover, which she assembles into something rather strange. Inspired by the unconventional approaches of Harry Partch and Bjork, Micachu uses techniques that make listening to her record as complicated as it is rewarding.

The guitar-driven Lips is a textured and punchy track. High pitched overtones give way to the raucous lyrics as she shouts over a chaotic mish-mash of sounds. Actually. Let’s face it, it sounds like it has been bashed out on pots pans and one of those kitchen egg slicers, but it is shambolically charming. It’s taken from debut album Jewellery which is out on February 2.
