What I Have Left - Mike Bones
Born in New Jersey but based across the Hudson River in New York, Mike Bones is known – under his real name, Mike Strallow – as one of the city’s best guitar players. So far, he’s mostly taken a backseat role in other people’s bands, performing with, amongst others, Soldiers Of Fortune and Cass McCombs. Now 28, Strallow released his first solo album last year under the Mike Bones moniker, and is now making moves on this side of the Atlantic, with the release of his debut UK single. Taken from his forthcoming second album, A Fool For Everyone, What I Have Left is a plaintive ode to a love that’s growing more sour by the minute. It’s a simple but powerful song, a direct message to a lost love set to a gentle rolling guitar and a subtle string accompaniment that gradually builds into a crescendo as the song builds in desperation. Honest and revealing without being sentimental or too self-pitying, What I Have Left is a fine introduction to Mr Bones which will no doubt entice people to attend the handful of UK dates he has scheduled for the end of this month and at the start of February.
