To mark Motown records' 50th anniversary this week, Q Radio's mod-in-residence Eddie Piller will devote his show this Friday, January 16, at 9pm to the Motor City giant. Eddie's playlist will include tunes by Marvin Gaye, Tammi Terrell, Gladys Knight, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas, Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Stevie Wonder and more, plus Eddie will air his exclusive interview with Martha Reeves.
If you can't wait for that, then feast your eyes on Q's pic of the best Motown on the web. This weekend, make sure you'll be dancing in the streets...
Martha & The Vandellas perform Heat Wave on Ready Steady Go! in 1965. RSG!'s slogan was 'The weekend starts here!', so let's not spoil the sentiment, eh?
Ready Steady Go!' was the only TV show to champion Motown in the UK - and indeed the only pop and rock show going. Here's a taste of their Motown special The Sound Of Motown with host Dusty Springfield performing with Martha and the girls
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terell's storming Ain't No Mountain High Enough
Stevie Wonder, with I Was Made To Love Her
The Temptations get their groove on with Get Ready!
Just to tip our hat to some unsung heroes, here's a snippet of the fabulous Standing In The Shadows Of Motown documentary, featuring the best backing band in the world, ever, The Funk Brothers - the men whom Motown left behind when they upped sticks and moved premises from Detroit to sunny LA overnight in 1972. This concert sees them reunited in 2002.
And now for the covers - we promise no big-shouldered Jagger/Bowie nerkery, Deep Purple's technicolour We Can Work It Out, Beatles-bothered Mr Postman or Mamas And Papas' sunny harmonies on Dancing In The Street, but we can kick off with soft-focus glam-goths Japan's rather faithful rendition of The Miracle's I Second That Emotion in 1980. Enjoy.
Here's The Flying Lizards 1979 abrasively disdainful one-hit wonder, Barrett Strong track Money (That's What I Want)
Bananarama rope in Fun Boy Three for their 1982 hit rendition of The Velvelettes' Really Saying Something
ABC's parp-tastic 1987 tribute to Smokey Robinson. As annoyingly catchy as glitter-sprinkled zoonoses
Finally, we'll leave you with a really good 'un. The sound quality may be a little eardrum-shredding, but you can't deny the power of the rough-around-the egdes Rod and The Faces version of (I Know) I'm Losing You...

Is that from THE Wendy May, of Locomotion club fame? Mr Piller, please invite Wendy on your show - and reunite her with DJ Andy Lewis, who is now playing bass in Paul Weller's band I believe? Wendy May, you ran the best soul club in North London in the 80s and 90s. Thanks for rockin' the dancefloor every week!
