On My Shoulders - The Dø

If slightly weird band names are your thing, then you’re advised to check out The Dø - a boy girl duo based in Paris consisting of half-Finnish Olivia Merilahti (guitar and vocals) and French Dan Levy (keyboards and bass). So varied are the styles to their music that each song of theirs could almost be by a different band, were it not for Olivia’s very distinctive voice, which flits between childlike innocence and riot grrl experience at the flick of a cowbell. Although On My Shoulders will be their first UK release, the album that it’s from – A Mouthful, which will be available over here in the spring – already has unique status by being the first French record sung in English to reach number one in France. Confused? That’s part of the charm. On My Shoulders is one of their most accessible and poppy songs, but it’s still full of their trademark nuances, as well as some particularly lovelorn, wistful lyrics. It’s a fragile slice of disaffected pop that balances its catchiness with its sadness almost perfectly.
