We Have Band - West End Girls
As we have been told again and again 2009 is the year of synth pop. With practically every label pushing their own take on that rather broad theme it was pretty much a self-fulfilling prophecy, but the fact that Lady Gaga has already made a mark with a number one, the stage is clearly set.
We Have Band delve back a little further than some, picking up the threads of that almost skeletal electronica that was prevalent when the pre-Dare Human League and the first incarnation of Depeche Mode were experimenting with sound. Formed in Manchester the trio (Thomas, Dede and Darren) have already showcased their wares with their Oh single, released a couple of months ago. But the track we are highlighting today is their telling reinterpretation of the Pet Shop Boys hit West End Girls. Already a live fixture, it’s kind of a timely choice, given the band are to be honoured for their outstanding contribution to music at the Brits next month.
It’s a fairly faithful version although sounding a touch more primitive than the original and it rather suits the male-female vocal mix.
