28 Costumes - This Band Has Eaten All Our Money

Liverpool five-piece 28 Costumes leap into 2009 with the release of the fabulously titled This Band Has Eaten All Our Money. They’ve been on the scene for quite a while now, releasing an album, The Fake Death Experience, in 2004 and garnering high praise from names that are actually worthy of being big, such as Robert Smith and Seasick Steve. “Some of their songs are real loud, and some are real pretty,” said the latter.
This is one of the real loud ones, a brash and jerky affair that lurches about with impassioned urgency, suggesting that the band has done more than just eaten all their money – it’s buried itself so deep into their skin that they’re unable to do anything else.

Luckily, they’re good enough to take the risk. This is a quirky and funny song, but it’s also pretty meaningful despite its slightly silly lyrics. By taking their time to hone their craft, instead of jumping headfirst onto the nearest bandwagon, they’ve made a song that is an accurate reflection of these difficult, penurious times but one which you can dance to.

So shake and jump around until all the coins fall from your pockets, because that’s precisely what 28 Costumes have been doing for the last five years. It’s served them well.

  • First heard them on Roger Hills PMS show on Radio Merseyside many years ago. Have seen them play at Mathew street fest, Liverpool music week, great gig at the Barly and the Cali (free rock n roll night).
I bought a copy of 'fake death experience' when they played Korova. First time i listened to it was in my car, i thought this bands like a Hurricane, theres no stability, i nearly crashed my car for the first time in 21 years, their uncontrollable, do you know, their not fake or fraudulant, still would a record company give them a cash advance or think they were dull boys and not get along with them and send them onto the trans-siberian express.
