Coldplay and Plant lead Brit Grammy triumphs

Comments

Coldplay were triple winners as British acts pulled in a haul of awards at last night's Grammy Awards.

The event also saw Robert Plant take home the key album of the year title for his collaboration with Alison Krauss on Raising Sand, as well as record of the year with the track Please Read The Letter.

Coldplay's triumphs included the prized song of the year award for Viva La Vida, and the same track won performance of the year. Their fourth album - Viva La Vida Or Death And All His Friends - was named best rock album.

Chris Martin told guests at the Los Angeles awards show: "We've never had so many Grammys in our life. We feel so grateful to be here. I'm going to tear up."

Plant's haul of trophies included an incredible five titles with best contemporary folk/Americana album, best country vocal collaboration and best pop collaboration with vocals completing their cache.

Former Led Zep frontman Plant, 60, said: "I'd like to say I'm bewildered. In the old days we would have called this selling out. But it's a good way to spend a Sunday."

Other Brit performers to be rewarded included Adele who was named best new artist and took the best pop vocal performance title for her single Chasing Pavements.

And collecting the title she namechecked a fellow homegrown solo star: "Duffy, I love you. I think you're amazing."

Radiohead took two awards - best alternative album for In Rainbows and best boxed or special edition album. The band were among the performers at the prestigious US event last night - performing with a marching band - along with U2, Sir Paul McCartney (backed by Dave Grohl) and M.I.A. who showed extreme commitment because she had been due to give birth last night.

Lil Wayne, nominated for eight prizes, landed four awards at the annual event which features dozens of categories.
