Jon Allen – Dead Man’s Suit
In these cash-strapped times the pilgrimage to the charity shop will probably become a necessity for anyone who wants to maintain a decent set of threads without exploiting a Third World workforce. But within that world of dusty, musty static-charged polyester with its sharp whiff of dry cleaning fluid, have you ever wondered just how those tweeds, herringbone three-pieces and the occasional designer gem got there? Of course there are those community-minded souls who don’t want to bin perfectly serviceable items, but perhaps they have come from a house clearance by the recently bereaved.
This is where Jon Allen takes his cue; he imagines being possessed by the spirit of his recently acquired outfit with a mildly eerie tremolo guitar, the sort of Hammond riff you would find in a Seventies public information film and a choppy guitar riff, as if The Auteurs’ Lenny Valentino had been hammered out on an acoustic.
Winchester-born, Devon-raised and LIPA-trained, Allen was fired by a love of The Beatles and classic rock from an early age, swapping his Sinclair Spectrum for an electric guitar to pursue his youthful dreams. After finishing his studies and favourable reviews for his demos, he landed supports for acts such as Damien Rice and KT Tunstall.
He also provided the theme to a Land Rover ad, which enabled him to set up his own label Monologue. His debut album – also called Dead Man’s Shoes is due for release on March 2.
