Robyn Hitchcock - Hurry For The Sky
Hitchcock is one of the greatest unsung heroes of British music. Plugging away for more than 30 years, fronting various incarnations of backing bands, he is still probably better known on the US college rock scene – thanks to his R.E.M. connections - than he is at home, despite his exquisitely English-accented Barrett-esque singing voice.
Major label deals, Hollywood roles and a wealth of influential friends have done little to elevate him beyond largely cult appeal which is a huge pity because more deserve to hear his prolific output and often surreal lyrics which have revolved largely around – as characterised by the title of a 2007 BBC4 documentary about his career - Sex, Food Death … and Insects.
This week sees the release of his second album with the Venus 3, Goodnight Oslo, a collaboration with Peter Buck, Scott McCaughey and Bill Rieflin with guests vocals from the likes of Decemberist Colin Meloy. The spikier elements of early releases have mellowed with age of his earlier releases but his music is no less captivating.
Hurry For The Sky is one of the standout tracks - its shuffling beat chugging like a late night drive on a lonely road, the sliding bottleneck guitar tones like whizzing past neon-lit truck stops. Or something.

Goodnight Oslo is really one of the best records of the last decade. Keep on keepin' on, Robyn. Here's hoping for an EP with Sickyboy and Evolve sometime soon.

Great to hear a new album from Robyn!
I look foward to hearing this more in debt.
THanks for the track samples! Gonna try to make the NC show.
