Camera Obscura – French Navy
“You, with your dietary restriction/ said you loved me with a lot of conviction,” coos Camera Obscura singer Tracyanne Campbell. Although it could very well be about heat transfer in the garden and the line might be ‘a lawn of convection’ – frankly it’s impossible to tell. Still, it’s a delightfully cute take on sixties Euro-pop with its understated, slightly distant, production - all melancholic echoes and string flourishes.
French Navy heralds the band’s fourth album My Maudlin Career which sees them move to a new home at 4AD and returning to record in Sweden, reviving the successful relationship with producer Jari Haapalainen which began on 2006’s Let’s Get Out Of This Country. Tracks have already been warmly received at SXSW.
French Navy is the ‘five-day favourite’ single of the week on Q Radio’s QPM show. You can hear it on the programme each weeknight from 6pm until Friday.
