The Deer Tracks - Yes, This Is My Broken Shield
Yes This Is My Broken Shield is the lead track on the forthcoming debut album by The Deer Tracks – a boy-girl duo from Sweden consisting of Elin Lindfors and David Lehnberg. A bold and ambitious song, it starts off with a few clicks and clacks, bleeps and blips, before the soothing, melancholy voice of Lindfors slowly washes over the minimal instrumentation and the song gently builds and builds into a dramatic climax.
Combing the majestic, sweeping soundscapes of post-rock celebrities Sigur Ros with the more grounded electronics of little-known Danish indie group EPO-555 (obscure, perhaps, but they are very similar), The Deer Tracks manage to tiptoe along that fine line between introspection and self-indulgence – no easy feat when the song in question is over 11 minutes long.
But they come out with their feet firmly on the right side of the line – there isn’t one second of this song, one instrument played, that doesn’t need to be here. Yes This Is My Broken Shield is a stark, spectral and truly special song. So much so, in fact, that you can easily forgive its slightly pretentious title.
