Delphic – Counterpoint
No, nothing to do with oracles or ancient Greece, this trio hail from Manchester and carry on the a tradition of electronica in the city which has found form in the likes of New Order and 808 State.
Richard Boardman, Matthew Cocksedge and James Cook marry their repetitive beats to affable melodies, in marked contrast to the stark, one word titles which seem to be attached to many of their tracks (Submission, Halcyon, Counterpoint …). Cooked up on laptops, the Delphic boys throw in more organic instruments to swell the sound of their tunes later then work out how to create the sounds live.
Despite the music’s birth in the grey, cloud-ridden Pennine approach, there is a breezy Euro-touch to the sound, replicated in the Counterpoint video’s art-house styling (um, it looks like grey, cloud-ridden eastern Europe). The track itself is all swirling textures, jittery modulations, phased string effects and swooshes (in fact it all sounds rather reminiscent of the natty sounds we were knocking out in the Q office recently after we were given temporary custody of a magnificent microKorg XL - we also managed to recreate the sounds of almost every rave tune, the collected works of Kraftwerk and the Doctor Who theme in a matter of minutes, by the way).
