Gomez - Airstream Driver

Since Gomez’s 1998 album Bring It On won the coveted Mercury Music Prize they have all but disappeared from view to the record-buying public at large. Tom Gray’s husky howls and their take on primal swampy blues - years before before The White Stripes had taken such unfashionable sounds to a mainstream audience - briefly made them a celebrated but peer-free draw.

Although, they achieved bigger hits with their next two albums, they went on to be greeted by a general air of indifference and suffered diminishing returns so the reception for this latest effort - the band's sixth studio album - will be interesting to observe.

To herald the arrival of A New Tide, forthcoming single Airstream Driver sees them pushing big riffs, a tubthumping snaking rhythm and a reassuring calm in Ian Ball’s soothing vocal. This is the sort of thing that made them one of the most endearing indie bands around.
