Grizzly Bear - Cheerleader

Two albums have dominated the powerful, eardrum-crunching stereo which sits like an altar in the Q office. For many weeks Merriweather Post Pavilion was virtually unchallenged, its pulsing carousel spinning around the room again and again. But now it faces a rival. Grizzly Bear’s forthcoming masterwork Veckatimest which is shaping up as a shoo-in for the best of the year lists.

It is almost as if each of the tracks on this Brooklyn band’s second album has been created by a different artist such is the scope of sound. The fact they have toured with Radiohead will come as no surprise to the listener although GB’s approach and experimentalism is far less intimidating.

Today’s download Cheerleader – taken from Veckatimest - is a thudding beauty, its muted guitar strings and military beat meshing hypnotically with its woozy, pastoral harmonies and ticklish hi-hat. It's the closest the new album gets to a tune you could shake your pom-poms, albeit lazily.

Veckatimest itself opens with a high - Southern Point, a prog-ish suite of jazz bass/drum patterns, hyperactive acoustic folk shapes and euphoric crescendos – but it is consistently engaging; All We Ask is a sonic relative of Jeff Buckley’s Dream Brother. And what’s more, they’re smartly dressed young men in nicely pressed shirts. To whet the appetite further here is a TV performance of another album track, Two Weeks
