Imelda May – Big Bad Handsome Man

Some acts are so gloriously out of sync with the world, so totally at odds with the prevailing climate, that it is a wonder they were afforded even the slimmest glimmer of opportunity. Who would have thought that a bunch of beardy, harmony-rich rural folk-country-rockers like Fleet Foxes would have a chance of commercial success?

So too, you may think, for a pencil skirt and leopard-print-clad kitten in scarlet lipstick hollering vintage rockabilly blues, as is the case with Imelda May. But no matter how out of time the concept may sound, she has already found a willing audience. And it also helps to have some impressive patronage - in Mallen-streak-quiffed May’s case it has been Jools Holland. She also has a Royal Albert Hall date with Jeff Beck and an invitation to appear on the next Elbow album.

New single Big Bad Handsome Man – released on April 13 and taken from debut album Love Tattoo - sees less of a nod to early rock’n’roll and more of an embrace of a slice of Louis Prima-style booming swing-blues with its King Of The Swingers dirty brass parps.
