Jack Peñate - Tonight’s Today
Despite the success of his 2007 debut, Matinee, indie popster Jack Peñate became the whipping boy for the cool kids. His name was a byword for bland, shorthand for sub-standard. It was unfair but the label stuck.
Tonight’s Today is the perfect riposte to those sneers. Infused with a groove shipped directly from the Balearics and boasting a distinctly Afrobeat guitar line, it’s a world away from ordinary – a wide-eyed hymn to warm afternoons and blazing sunsets.
As Peñate repeats the title like a mantra the song builds to create the feeling of a euphoric party happening just over the horizon. It’s gloriously ambitious and yet perfectly simple, a sure-fire candidate to soundtrack the summer
If Peñate and producer Paul Epworth have managed to imbue the rest of his as-yet-untitled second album with the same joyful spirit, his days of suffering derision should be over. Tonight’s Today is out on March 30.
